This is the view out the window of our room at the Bed & Breakfast in Dover. We were on the second floor.

Yes, the cliffs of Dover are white. The platform on the top of the cliffs is an observation deck built for military purposes. The cliffs have a series of tunnels in them that were dug over the years for a military post. We toured the tunnels but pictures were not allowed.

It was a very windy day. We walked along the coast watching the surf pound the shore.

We asked the B & B proprietor about the multiple tubes coming out the chimneys. There are multiple fireplaces in each residence. Each of the fireplaces has its own flue pipe to the roof. When there is a common wall between two residences, there are two rows of flue pipes, one row for each side of the common wall. Most fireplaces are no longer used for air quality reasons. Most of the heat is from hot water radiators from a central natural gas furnace.

Thirsk is the home town of James Harriot (Alf Wight) of "All Creatures Great and Small" fame. This is the clock in the town square.

About two blocks from our B & B, this is St Mary's Church. It was built in the 1400s. To me that is old but a friend we stayed with said that after you have seen 15 or 20 of the old churches, they all start to run together. We in the US are not accustomed to old buildings such as are common in the UK.

Pictures inside the church are allowed and maybe even encouraged as long as you leave a one pound donation. All the pictures I took inside were taken without flash. It was a challenge to balance the light and dark of the interior.

A lady in the church told me that the stained glass in this window was blown out by a bomb in WWII. The pieces were picked up and the window reassembled like a jigsaw puzzle. She said that a few of the pieces are probably not in their original locations.

This picture is a longer exposure which gives a better view of the stone work inside. Its amazing to think that the work was done almost 600 years ago.

We visited the James Harriot museum. This is a figure (wax?) of Mrs. Pumphrey and her dog, Tricki Woo. You'd have to read the book.

I could not resist this picture. Some how, Beer Garden and Childrens Play Area seems a bit incongruous. But then the attitude in England toward alcoholic beverages is some what different than we see in the US. We attended Palm Sunday services in Frome (pronounced Frume, rhymes with plume). The church bulletin listed a Men's night out and I quote "at the Olive Tree to sort out the world over a pint". Don't see that in many church fliers in the US

This was sort of a typical major train station. We used Britrail passes for our travel. All you do is show up at the station and there is usually a train to your desired destination within a half an hour.

I had to take at least a few pictures of the cars. Small cars are the norm. It might have something to do with the price of gas in England, 1.079 pounds per liter. That works out to over $8 per gallon. I would want a REAL economy car too!!

All the streets we saw, especially in town, were of the VERY narrow variety. With cars parked on the street, it was not unusual that there would only be one usable lane. For two way traffic, drivers need to yeild from time to time to get through the streets.

This is as I recall Cheap Street, an obviously narrow street of shops. We stopped for a Hot Cross bun, cheap sure did not apply to the prices.

Along the Thames, there were several folks in various outfits. This guy would pedal furiously for a few seconds when someone dropped money in the bucket in front of him. He would then invite the person to his side for a picture. What a way to make a living.

This is the London Eye. It is a big ferris wheel that makes a revolution in about a half an hour. You pay 15 pounds for the privilege. It is about 440' in diameter.
